Review: Sophia Birth Control Pills

DISCLAIMER: I am not in any way associated with this product nor have medical background about this matter. I am simply a blogger who decided to share my experience with this product. If you are confused about the dosage, schedule, etc., better consult a doctor to be safe.

Though I expected that I might use this product somehow, it never crossed my mind to review and post it here. But when I searched for reviews of this product after my Ob/Gyne prescribed this to me, I learned that there isn’t much written about this in the web so I decided to write about this in order to share my experience to other new users. Actually, this is not a new drug but maybe not as popular as the others hence the lack of review.

Since we are planning to delay the coming of our little bundle of joy due to a couple of trips we already booked, one for next month and the other for March next year, we decided to go for birth control. Initially, I wanted the injectable method to keep me safe for three months but upon the advice of my co-workers who went through the same route, I changed my mind and went for birth control pills.

I went to my Ob/Gyne to ask for prescription and advice as to the proper use since I am a first timer. She gave me this particular drug as she has some samples available.

Use.
My monthly period came on the 14th September and I went to see my Ob/Gyne on the 16th, a Tuesday. Since birth control pill packs should start on a Sunday, she advised me to take the Sunday pill on the 16th (night), Monday and Tuesday pills on 17th (Wednesday, one in the morning, one at night) and Wednesday and Thursday pills on 18th (Thursday, one in the morning, one at night). This is to catch up for the missed days which I am supposed to be taking the pills. The next day, I started taking one pill everyday (every night).

Side Effects.
This pill isn’t without its side effects. First week into the pack, I felt dizzy, a bit nauseous and I experienced few palpitations. I also woke up to a terrible headache on one of the days during the first week. And being a paranoid migraine-sufferer that I am, I decided to just stay in bed for fear that things may get worse when I am in the office or worse, when I’m on the road.

During the second week, the feeling of nausea and dizziness seems to improve and palpitations are less frequent. Also, I noticed that my breasts became firmer and the size increased a little bit. Oh yeah! Great for flat-chested women like me. LOL! When taking birth control pills, many women complain about its effects on their sex drive but I don’t see any changes in my case. It’s still the same prior to taking this.

Seven Pill-free Days.
After taking the 21st pill, the next seven days would be rest period. According to my Ob/Gyne, my period will come within the seven-day period and rightly so, it arrived on the 5th day. My period usually lasts for three days, just in time to start an entirely new pack of pills.

Conclusion. I used this pill for a month only as my Ob gave me a different pill during my succeeding visit. With that, I cannot attest to its long-term effect such as weight gain, acne and others. But what I have experienced so far is enough to make me decide to go back to this pill in case my Ob asked me to, or if the new pill (Althea) I’m using doesn’t work for me.

  3. Hi Ms. Chamee!

Thank you for visiting my blog. I'm not sure if it is required talaga na Sunday mag start taking the pills but it was advised by my OB so sinunod ko na lang. Plus, it will be easy for me to determine if naka-take na ako for the day or wala pa. Less confusion and error daw pag ganun. After taking the 21 tablets, within one week din dumadating period ko.

    Hope this helps! :)

    1. Hi!

Thank you for reading my post.

So far wala naman akong nakitang negative effects sa skin ko. I only used it for 5 months lang and then stopped kasi we tried conceiving and now I'm pregnant na. First option ko din before ang injectable kaso a co-worker said na naging irregular period nya with injectable so I opted for pills.

      Hope this helps.

    1. Hi Taurus16,

Thank you for your comment. I think it's ok naman to switch from Althea to Sophia. When my OB ran out of physician's sample ng sophia, she gave me the Althea pack and I switched back to Sophia the next month. If you are doubtful, it is still better to ask your doctor.

      Hope this helps. :)

  11. Hi, just want to know your opinion. medyo naguluhan lang ako. Di ko kasi naconsult sa OB ko to. I am taking cerezette pills for 2 months after i gave birth kasi nagpapabreastfeed pa ako. Tapos after ng 28th pill nung cerezette, nagtake na aq kaagad ng sophia(as prescribed din ng OB ko) kasi nag stop naman na aq magbreastfeed.. According to her, normal lang dw na hindi ako magkakaperiod because of taking oral contraceptives, so in essence hindi ko sinunod ung magstart ka magtake ng sophia sa 1st day ng menstruation mo. tinuloy tuloy ko lang. My question is, dapat ko pa rin ba sundin yung 7 pill-free days? Thank you

  14. hi Im an althea user for now and somebody suggested me to switched to Sophia, is it true na nakakapayat ito? since i badly wanted to lose weight, i want to try this too coz i really gained weight after taking injectibles last year. I have follow up question also, how about if i already switched to this then finished my 1st pack, during the 7day free pill what if my mens came at the 3rd or 4th day pill, Am i allowed to take the second pack on the first day of mens again? or shoul i wait until the 7day free pill is done before taking the 1st tablet of the 2nd pack? Thank you so much, looking forward to see you reply

    1. Hi there! Sorry for the late reply. I'm not too sure about the weight loss part because taking the pills didn't affect my weight. For the second question, I start taking the next pack after 7 days. Hope this helps!

    1. Hi! I'm not sure about it. As far as I know, pinapa-regulate ng pills ang menstrual period natin and when regular na ang period, we can easily track kung kailan tayo mag-ovulate and when is the best time to "do it". I suggest, you visit your OB para ma advise ka regarding sa pagbubuntis. That is what I did. :)

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Do you currently breastfeed your child? Daphne is prescribed to breastfeeding moms. I currently use Daphne because I breastfeed my seven-month old son. If you plan on changing your birth control pills, better consult an OB to be sure.

  22. hello gurls..just like to share some insights about pills.. it doesnt matter what day magstart as long as, i will reiterate this, AS LONG AS YOU ARE SURE YOUR NOT PREGNANT..you can start it any day of the week..yung days na nakasulat po sa pills is to lessen lang ang confusion if you have taken it that day or not..sa 21 pills po all pills have the same content so even if you alternately take it as long as u take one at the same time per day that would be fine.. sa 28 pills the last 7 pills are iron..if you want to start a new pack during the 7day free pill period that would be fine, if you do so, most likely you are not going to have menses because the 7 day free pill was intended for menstruation period thats why po may iron to replace blood losses..

    hope this helps!Godbless everyone!

And she recommend the sophia pill.I read your blog and i'm just wondering what is side effects of this sophia pill. This make me gain weight kahit tumaba lang ako ng konti. Ayoko kasi nang payat ang pangit kasing tignan.

  25. Hi! I was diagnosed of having PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) by my OB and was given Diane to medicate it. After consuming 1 pack I never got back to taking it since my period wen back to normal. I was only advised to take it again if there will be another existing hormonal imbalance. However, recently I've been having breakouts and my period comes later than usual so I guess there's an imbalance again. I opted to go for a cheaper pack since Diane costs around 700. I came across to Sophia pill which is only 200. I did a research earlier and it says it's acually recommended for women who are experiencing female hypogonadism and vasomotor symptoms and other cases. Sophia contains Gestodene and Ethinyl Estadiol that actually helps those who have the said symptoms. I'd like to ask, would it still be safe to take the said pills as an alternative for Diane/Althea Pills? Hoping for a feedback about this inquiry. Thank you!

    1. Hi! I'm taking pills for 10 years now, changing pills after couple of months because of side effects na nakakataba. But Nung nag try ako ng Sophia pills, ok nman sya. Di sya nakakataba. So far, maganda. Problema out in the market na, I don't know why.. sayang affordable pa nman unlike sa ibang pills in the market.

Sa tanong na paano inumin.. if magpapalit ka ng pills, make sure to take your first tablet in the first day of your monthly period anytime sa unang araw ng dalaw, pero make sure na maging consistent sa oras. If your take it at 8pm the next day 8pm again and wag kalimutan ang unang araw na uminom ka kc after 28 days magtaka ka ulit ng panibagong banig ng pills mo, same day at same time mo ulit iinumin. 21 days lang ang pills, with 7 days free. Yung 7 days pahinga yun in taking pills, and sa loob ng 7 days na yan dadatnan ka ng monthly period mo. Make sure to prevent contact during that rest days kasi may possibilities na mabuntis ka. After nung 7 days free mo, the next day pwede ka na ulit mag take ng pills. Suggestion, para d mo makalimutan ang araw ng pag inum ng pills maglagay ka ng note sa calendar. sana nasagot ko tanong mo.
